The Season Kicks off Tonight
La Costa Canyon Mavericks head coach Sean Sovacool makes his anticipated debut as the 2010 San Diego high school football season kicks off with a North County vs. South County battle. La Costa Canyon, from the newly aligned Avocado West league, travels down south to take on the Spartans of Chula Vista, members of the Metro Mesa league.

The Mavericks take the field 8 months after their deflating upset loss to the Vista Panthers in the CIF Semifinals. Anyone who sported forest green and navy blue that night would love to forget that horrid game which eliminated the previously undefeated 11-0 Mavericks from CIF title contention and a possible bid at a division 1 Bowl matchup.

The Mavericks said goodbye to Kenny Stills, San Diego's alltime leader in receiving yards. He's taken his talents to big-12 at Oklahoma. No more Adam Witzmann (USD), Paul Quessenberry (Navy), Justin Di're (Whyoming), Correy Lamb (Palomar), Seth Hanson, Bobby Zalud (Arkansas State). Darrin Brown, LCC coach for 10 seasons, has retired from football, for the time being.

The 2010 squad will field some familiar faces. Garrett Krstich, a top quarterback in North County, leads an offense that lost key players: Kenny Stills, Seth Hanson, and Weston Manor. Krstich had an explosive year in 2009 as a junior, and has emerged at the team's leader. He is gritty, tough as nails, and focused on rallying the troops. He is not afraid to throw the ball deep down the field or scramble and lower the shoulder on a defensive player (think back to last year's 4th down play vs. Escondido).

On the defensive side of the ball, three players really stand out that should make a big impact and wreak havoc for opposing offenses: linebacker Ian Seau, linebacker Erik Nelson, and defensive lineman Spenser Laughter. Ian and Erik are both quick, strong, and aggressive. They will play a crucial role in limiting the opponents inside and outside rushing games. Spenser will anchor the defensive line.

Tonight's game preview

Chula Vista is in rebuilding mode and has no full time returning starters form last year's squad. In terms of playing time, their offense and defense have little varsity game experience. Expect La Costa Canyon to start the game pounding the ball on the ground and establishing the run early. They will rack up a ton of yards on the ground, and might pull out a couple play action passes for some big gains, getting the receivers involved after the first quarter. La Costa's defense will lead the team and get after the Spartan quarterback.

As with any first game, there will likely be missed assignments and some penalties as players get acclimated to the faster regular season playing speed.

Prediction: La Costa Canyon 42, Chula Vista 7

Chula vista is young, but both teams will be shaky in their first games. Don't know about 42 points for LCC, probably more like 30 and Chula will score maybe 14
