La Costa Canyon beat Torrey Pines Friday night 21-7 in a physical contest decorated with high emotions and big hits. La Costa Canyon has now won 20 games in a row, the county's longest winning streak without a loss or a tie, and will advance to take on Vista in the semifinals.

La Costa Canyon (11-0) opened the game with an emphatic first possession drive spanning the length of the field, capped off by a short Ronnie Crouse touchdown.

Torrey Pines (5-6-1) responded with a touchdown drive of its own. Quarterback John Cabot connected with Ryan Rodas for a highlight-worthy 47-yard play down the left sideline. Near the goaline, Cabot QB sneaked for a 1-yard touchdown.

With the game tied 7-7 La Costa Quarterback Garrett Krstich kicked it into high gear and led the Mavericks down the field in the second quarter and scored on a short run. Krstich, pumped up by the rivalry game, seemed possessed and delivered blows on his quarterback scrambles, igniting the team and the Maverick faithful.

La Costa Canyon missed a golden opportunity for a field goal attempt as time expired in the second quarter. The teams went to halftime with the Mavericks up 14-7, and coach Brown a little frustrated on a 2-minute drill that ended in zero points.

The second half was a 1-score affair, as Garrett Krstich continued his offensive assault on the Falcons, rushing for a 5-yard third quarter score, his second rushing touchdown. Krstich finished 14-of-19 for 161 yards passing, 45 rushing yards, and 2 touchdowns.

Weston Manor added a solid performance with runningback Seth Hanson out, rushing 20 times for 149 yards. Ronnie Crouse, Shea Backus, and Justin Vergara also contributed to the rushing game.

Stellar wide receiver Kenny Stills had 9 catches for 107 yards and broke the all-time San Diego Section receiving mark. In his career, Stills now has 2,954 total yards receiving. Congratulations Kenny.

The final half of football was highlighted by a swarming La Costa Canyon defense, led by the Mavericks defensive line, who harassed Cabot nearly every time he dropped back to pass.

Defensive lineman Paul Quessenberry had the game of his life and would of been a fantastic fantasy performer, finishing with 4 sacks. Defensive lineman Adam Witzmann, seemed to be in on nearly every tackle and added a sack. His on-field enthusiasm and leadership strengthened the Gang Green attack. Senior defensive back Steven Bogert delivered a great hit. Ian Seau, Tucker Toolson, and Spencer Laughter also joined in on the sacking party. The Mavericks finished with an astounding 8 total sacks.

The Mavericks will host the Vista Panthers next week in the semifinals with their second-straight Qualcomm birth on the line. Vista eliminated the Fallbrook Warriors 27-7 to advance to play La Costa for the second straight year in the playoffs (their playoff game highlights from last year can be seen here).

Tonight the La Costa Canyon Mavericks host the Torrey Pines Falcons in the quarterfinals of the division I CIF playoffs. If the pressures of their first playoff game and a #2 ranking in the county weren't enough, the Mavericks must handle the hype of facing their arch rival 2 games in a row.

The La Costa Canyon-Torrey Pines rivalry dates back to San Dieguito High School and the opening of Torrey Pines High School in the 70s.

The Mavericks beat Torrey Pines just two weeks ago 30-20. The Falcons are coming off a first round playoff victory over Otay Ranch, winning 27-17.

The Mavericks offense is high powered and can score on a moment's notice from big plays from Quarterback Garrett Krstich, runningbacks Seth Hanson and Weston Manor, or wide receivers Kenny Stills and Jacob Siem. Hanson leads the ground game with 898 yards while Manor has 568. Krstich has 1,383 yards passing and the dangerous Stills has 45 receptions for 914 yards.

The La Costa Canyon defense is equally as powerful, led by first all-league players Adam Witzmann and Ian Seau. Linebacker Dylan Laurino and defensive lineman Paul quessenberry make big hits and are capable of energizing the defense.

Torrey Pines (5-5-1) led by head coach Scott Ashby, boasts a balance offensive attack. In lasts week's first round game, Joe Driscoll had 18 carries for 103 yards rushing against Otay Ranch and has 761 yards on the season. John Wilson had 59 yards on eight carries last week and has 564 on the season. Kevin Cuff ran six times for 52 yards and a 20-yard TD run midway through the fourth quarter.

Quarterback John Cabot completed 8-of-13 passes for 173 yards a week ago and has 1,155 yards on the season.

Get your popcorn ready. This should be a classic North County playoff battle.

Couldn't help but share this with everybody. Kenneth Acker with the long punt return for a touchdown, all within 33 yards of field. Strike a pose sir, strike a pose.

Play of the day: Grant's Kenneth Acker's amazing punt return touchdown

The first round of the CIF playoffs are in the books and in Division 1, the most intriguing 2nd round matchup pairs La Costa Canyon against arch rival Torrey Pines.

On Friday, the Falcons beat a pesky Otay Ranch opponent, 27-17. Runningback Joseph Driscoll led the Falcons in rushing, running 18 times for 103 yards and 1 touchdown. Falcons quarterback John Cabot looked good and threw for 173 yards.

Torrey Pines now advances to face La Costa Canyon at La Costa in the quarterfinals. The two teams battled just two week ago, with La Costa Canyon outdoing Torrey Pines 30-20. With a semi-final appearance at stake and bragging rights on the line, expect a raucous environment and a physical game. La Costa Canyon has not lost in almost 2 seasons.

Other division 1 playoff scores from Friday night:

Fallbrook 7 - Rancho Bernardo 6
Mira Mesa 48 - Carlsbad 29
El Camino 31 - Chula Vista 7

Second round (quarterfinal) matchups in Division 1:

Mira Mesa @ Escondido
Fallbrook @ Vista
El Camino @ Eastlake

The San Diego high school football season is about to kick into high gear. After a season of thrills, the playoffs are here, and the CIF playoff seedings are in.

In division I, La Costa Canyon (10-0) captured the number 1 seed, receives a bye, and will face the winner of Otay Ranch (3-6-1) and Torrey Pines (4-5-1). The Falcons have bettered their play over the duration of the season, and will likely face LCC in the quarterfinals, a potential replay of their final regular season game, which ended in a 30-20 loss to the Mavericks.

These other three teams will also receive first round byes: (2) Eastlake, (3) Escondido, and (4) Vista. Eastlake (8-0-2) has two ties against Moorpark and Lincoln. Escondido (7-2-1), arguably the second best team in division I, led by the powerful legs workhorse runningback Ricky Seale, lost to La Costa Canyon and Mission Hills, and tied Torrey Pines. Vista has two losses against Mission Viejo, one of the top teams in the state, and Escondido.

If the Mavericks can win at Qualcomm, they have an outside shot at earning a state bowl bid. The Mavericks need Oceanside to lose (slim chance), paired with a couple losses by south section teams, Edison (10-0) and Mission Viejo (10-0). Oceanside, although competing in Division II throughout the season, qualifies for a Division I bowl bid. Entering the first week of the playoffs, Oceanside, Edison, and Mission Viejo are all ranked above La Costa Canyon in the Southern California division I state bowl rankings.

More playoff analysis to come throughout the week...

Since its inception in 1996, the Mavericks best regular season record was accomplished by last year's CIF championship team at 8-2. La Costa Canyon (10-0) defeated arch rival Torrey Pines (4-5-1) 30-20 Friday night to advance to10-0, capping an undefeated regular season, and securing a number 1 season in the Division I playoffs for a second season in a row.

Torrey Pines opened the game, silencing the Maverick faithful, capping a long drive for a 5-yard rushing touchdown by John Wilson. But the Mavericks didn't wait long to respond.

The Mavericks opened the ensuing drive with a shell-shocking play; Junior quarterback Garrett Krstich connected with wide receiver Kenny Stills for an 80 yard pass with 5:53 remaining in the first quarter. After the Falcons were stopped by the LCC Gang Green defense, Mavericks runningback Seth Hanson went to work. The workhorse Hanson rushed for 3 touchdowns, including a stellar 56 yard run for the touchdown.

La Costa went into halftime with a commanding 27-7 lead.

The Falcons came alive in the second half, including 2 Blake Busse field goals, but the push was too late. LCC kicker Bobby Zalud nailed a 25-yard field goal with 4:49 left in the 4th quarter.

La Costa's first team defense shut down the Falcon offense, sacking Torrey Pines quarterback John Cabot multiple times. Ian Seau, Adam Witzmann, Paul Quessenberry, and Steven Bogert pressured the quarterback all night.

LCC runningback Seth Hanson finished the game with 116 yards rushing on 11 rushes, for 3 touchdowns. Kenny Stills averaged 26 yards per catch, connecting with Krstich for 6 receptions for 156 yards receiving. Krstich completed 10-for-16 for 196 yards and 1 touchdown, giving up 2 interceptions.

While Torrey Pines' playoff fate will lye in the hands of the CIF playoff seeding committee, convening Saturday morning, the Mavericks will assuredly take the #1 seed, finishing undefeated with a key victory over the second best team in division I, Escondido. The Mavericks have won 19 games straight.

The La Costa Canyon offensive attack mirrors that of the New Orleans Saints offense: big play, big yards, big athletes, and tons of points to make any fantasy wizard drool over.

But it was La Costa Canyon Gang Green defensive that shut down the Fallbrook Warriors on Friday night, 41-7. La Costa Canyon is still undefeated at 9-0, the schools best start ever.

Mavericks opened the game on defense, immediately pressuring the Fallbrook quarterback and planting him on his back on many occasion. With defensive's tenacious play, led by Adam Witzmann (2 sacks), Ian Seau (1 interception), Paul Quessenberry (1 sack), and Alex Pardieu (1 interception), the hostility of La Costa Canyon slowed the Warrior offense, even though they ended with a little over 300 total yards. Defensive back Tucker Toolson had some hits. Seau tipped a ball at the line of scrimmage and interepted it himself.

La Costa Canyon tank of a runningback Seth Hanson, pounded with 114 yards and 3 rushing touchdowns. Junior quarterback Garrett Krstich added 2 rushing touchdowns of his own. Senior wide receiver Jacob Siem has come on strong since the middle of the season, emerging as a valuable posession receiver. Siem led the receivers with 3 catches for 57 yards.

The Mavericks host district rival Torrey Pines this coming Friday at La Costa Canyon. Should the Mavericks win, it will cap the school's first ever undefeated season and easily guarantee them a lock for the number 1 seed heading into the Divsion I playoffs.
