Tonight the La Costa Canyon Mavericks host the Torrey Pines Falcons in the quarterfinals of the division I CIF playoffs. If the pressures of their first playoff game and a #2 ranking in the county weren't enough, the Mavericks must handle the hype of facing their arch rival 2 games in a row.

The La Costa Canyon-Torrey Pines rivalry dates back to San Dieguito High School and the opening of Torrey Pines High School in the 70s.

The Mavericks beat Torrey Pines just two weeks ago 30-20. The Falcons are coming off a first round playoff victory over Otay Ranch, winning 27-17.

The Mavericks offense is high powered and can score on a moment's notice from big plays from Quarterback Garrett Krstich, runningbacks Seth Hanson and Weston Manor, or wide receivers Kenny Stills and Jacob Siem. Hanson leads the ground game with 898 yards while Manor has 568. Krstich has 1,383 yards passing and the dangerous Stills has 45 receptions for 914 yards.

The La Costa Canyon defense is equally as powerful, led by first all-league players Adam Witzmann and Ian Seau. Linebacker Dylan Laurino and defensive lineman Paul quessenberry make big hits and are capable of energizing the defense.

Torrey Pines (5-5-1) led by head coach Scott Ashby, boasts a balance offensive attack. In lasts week's first round game, Joe Driscoll had 18 carries for 103 yards rushing against Otay Ranch and has 761 yards on the season. John Wilson had 59 yards on eight carries last week and has 564 on the season. Kevin Cuff ran six times for 52 yards and a 20-yard TD run midway through the fourth quarter.

Quarterback John Cabot completed 8-of-13 passes for 173 yards a week ago and has 1,155 yards on the season.

Get your popcorn ready. This should be a classic North County playoff battle.
